THWS: Nine graduates honoured for outstanding final theses

Nine graduates of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) were honoured for their outstanding final theses by the Hans-Wilhelm Renkhoff Foundation and the Society of Sponsors and Friends of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt in the foyer of Schweinfurt town hall. Afterwards, THWS president Professor Dr. Robert Grebner honoured Angelique Renkhoff-Mücke by awarding her the title of honorary senator for her tireless commitment for the University.

The foundation, founded in 1995 by the WAREMA-cofounder and manager Hans-Wilhelm Renkhoff, supports research projects from the areas of digitisation and sustainability, among others. The foundation regularly awards scholarships and honours students of technology and economics for excellent academic achievements. In addition to its corporate commitment, the foundation is also committed to society with holistic responsibility: not only ecologically and economically but also socially.

The awardees of THWS were: Rebekka Bärthele, Daniel Blümm, Sophie Englert, Markus Fischer, Alexander Gerat, Alexander Hansen, Marcel Marek and Daniel Seyfried. The Society of Sponsors and Friends of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt honoured Natalie Freißmuth for her bachelor's thesis.

German Advertising Film Award: Media Management alumna was nominated with two projects in the top 5 of junior films

Franziska Heinemann, Media Management alumna of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt was nominated for the German Advertising Film Award in the category junior films – two of her submissions are among the top 5.

In “A Forgotten Emergency”, Franziska Heinemann in cooperation with “Doctors without borders” pledges for save terminations of pregnancies as basic health care. In this project, Heinemann acted as creative producer and so carried out conceptualisation, organisation, planning, team management, and the financial and marketing-technical aspects of production. She also brought other THWS alumni on board: Alexander Draheim, Alicia Fiedler and Marco Riedl. The project was carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the Green Filming Badge of the Film Commission Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein.

In “Guardians of Colors”, Franziska Heinemann assisted in the post-production and acted as colourist. She had previously completed her bachelor's thesis in “Success factors for colour grading projects" (colour corrections) at THWS, which was supervised by Professor Dr. Thilo Büsching.

STEM-Award: Zonta Club Bad Kissingen-Schweinfurt honours two female students for the first time

For the first time, the Zonta Club Bad Kissingen-Schweinfurt has awarded the STEM-Award (STEM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) to two female students of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt: Anja Strauß, student of Mechanical Engineering, and Nina Höffkes, student of Logistics. Anja Strauß scored the second rank on the Zonta district level and thus received an additional special award.

Zonta, a world-wide organisation of women, is committed to improving women’s rights and gender equality. It aims to promote female students in engineering programmes. Anja Strauß and Nina Höffkes stood out with their extraordinary academic performances, their passion for engineering and their commitment to society.

“Lectures of the year”: THWS honours excellent teaching offers of three categories

In the course of the annual “THWS-Talks”, the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt has honoured teaching offers with a teaching award for the first time on 19 Jan 2023. Essential criteria for the awarding were technical, methodological and didactic excellence of the teaching offers, the implementation of innovative concepts, and that the lecture realised collaboration across degree programmes, faculties and universities.

In the category “In-person lecture of the year“, Professor Dr. Tanja Kleibl was honoured for her lecture “Excursion to Countries of Origin, Transit or Destination in the African or Latin American Context”. Professor Dr. Jan Schmitt, Professor Dr. Bastian Engelmann and Professor Dr. Andreas Schiffler were honoured for their lecture on “Machine Learning” in the category “Digital lecture of the year”.

In the category “Continuing education offer of the year“, Professor Dr. Tobias Aubele was honoured for his lecture “Customer Experience”, which is offered as part of the project “F-IT4 digitale Transformation“ at the Campus for Professional Development.

Syrian-Kurdish student Klala Chikhi receives a scholarship of the Professor Wolfgang Maria Fischer Foundation

For one year, Klala Chikhi, Syrian-Kurdish student of Computer Science at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt, will receive a scholarship of the Würzburg-based Professor Wolfgang Maria Fischer Foundation. Chikhi is currently in her seventh semester. She started her Computer Science studies in Syria. She came to Germany in 2017 and started her studies at THWS in 2019.

Her Dean Professor Dr. Peter Braun applauds Klala Chikhi. She was a very curious student, who always asked questions and wanted to know more. She has passed all her exams at first attempt, designed a teaching unit and has now found a Würzburg company where she can complete her bachelor's thesis and can thus supplement her theoretical computer science knowledge with practical experience.

The objective of the Professor Wolfgang Maria Fischer Foundation is promoting the education of qualified students of the bachelor's degree programme Computer Science at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt.
